A Great Thanksgiving Book for Kids
I want to share one of my favorite Thanksgiving books for kids. It is the story of Squanto — the Native American who helped the Pilgrims to survive. I have read this book to kids in a variety of environments (home, school, church, etc.), and it seems to intrigue them (and parents too!).
Squanto’s story is both tragic and miraculous. He was kidnapped and taken to Europe as a slave. When he finally escaped and returned home, he found that his tribe had all died by a plague. Yet, God seemed to have a special plan for him. During his time in Europe, he had learned the gospel, as well as English. So when the Pilgrims arrived and settled on the location of his old home, he was prepared to help them as a friend. William Bradford, governor of the Plymouth Plantation, said that Squanto was “a special instrument sent of God for their good, beyond their expectation” Bradford’s History of the Plymouth Settlement, 1608-1650, p. 80.
