Origin of Halloween
Many Christians struggle to decide how (or if) to celebrate Halloween. After all, it is a holiday that seems to emphasize darkness, superstition and fear. Furthermore, there is the claim that the holiday is pagan in origin. Is this assertion true? See my article at Crosswalk.com to find out.
You can find this and other great information on our Halloween Articles and Resources page.
I don’t understand what you mean that holidays are Christian based. When I search the scriptures of the Holy Bible I find nothing.I read the doctrine of Jesus Christ in the book of Matthew and find no where that Jesus told us to celebrate these holidays that you claim are Christian. When the word Christian means a follower of Jesus Christ. So my point is these holidays are pagan because no where in the Holy word of God do we read to celebrate saints or to worship saints.
When I say that the origin of a holiday is Christian, I mean that the holiday was started by Christians, for Christians, and to celebrate some aspect of the Christian faith. You are right, however, that our American holidays did not originate directly from Scripture (like the Jewish feasts, for example).
In regard to Halloween/All Saints’ Day, I absolutely agree that we should not worship the saints. Our worship is for God alone. However, I think it is appropriate to celebrate the lives of godly men and women insofar as they move us to be more like Christ. Remember that Paul said, “Follow my example as I follow the example of Christ” (1 Corin 11:1).
