Ingredients:
12 cups popcorn, popped
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup butter
1/4 cup corn syrup
1/2 t. baking soda
1/2 t. vanilla
1/2 t. orange extract, optional
1/2 t. red food coloring
1/2 t. yellow food coloring
tootsie rolls
*Requires 3 T. oil (I use peanut or canola) and 1/2 c. kernels
Directions:
1. To make the popcorn, place 3 T. of oil and 1/2 cup of popcorn kernels in a large frying pan. Cover with a lid slightly ajar, and turn the stove to medium heat. It takes a few minutes, before the kernels begin to pop. After a few minutes of active popping, the popping with subside. Remove from heat, and allow to cool.
2. Meanwhile, cut tootsie rolls in half lengthwise and roll in hand to make flat surface smooth; set aside.
3. In a saucepan, combine the sugar, butter and corn syrup. Bring to a boil over medium heat. Continue boiling for about 2 more minutes, stirring constantly. Remove from heat.
4. Stir baking soda, vanilla, orange extract and food coloring into syrup mixture. Place the popcorn in a very large bowl, and pour the syrup mixture over it. Toss with greased spoons to coat.
5. Form warm popcorn into a ball around a tootsie roll; bend the tootsie roll to form a stem. Place popcorn balls on wax paper to cool.
