Resurrection (or Easter Story) Cookies

This recipe includes a wonderful activity to do with your family on the night before Easter. It incorporates the most significant aspect of our Easter celebration — the empty tomb! It offers a hands-on, creative way to teach the Easter story, and as an added bonus, it makes a delicious meringue treat. If anyone knows the original source for this idea, please contact us.

Ingredients:

1 cup whole pecans

1 teaspoon vinegar

3 egg whites

Pinch of salt

1 cup sugar

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees.

2. Place pecans in a ziploc bag, and let children beat them into small pieces with a wooden spoon. Explain that after Jesus was arrested, he was beaten by the Roman soldiers. Read John 19:1-3.

3. Put 1 teaspoon vinegar into a mixing bowl. Allow children to smell it. Explain that when Jesus was thirsty on the cross He was given vinegar to drink. Read John 19:28-30.

4. Add egg whites to vinegar. Explain that eggs represent life and that Jesus gave His life to give us life. Read John 10:10-11.

5. Sprinkle a little salt into each child’s hand and have them brush it into the bowl. Let them taste their salty hands and explain that this represents the salty tears shed by Jesus’ followers, as well as the bitterness of our own sin. Read Luke 23:27.

6. Add 1 cup of sugar to the mixture and explain that the sweetest part of the story is that Jesus died because He loves us. His death demonstrates his love and makes it possible for us to have eternal life. Read Psalm 34:8 and John 3:16.

7. Beat with an electric mixer on high speed for 12 to 15 minutes until stiff peaks are formed. Explain that the color white represents purity; God spilled his blood on the cross to cleanse us from our sins and make us pure. Read Isaiah 1:18 and 1 John 3:1-3.

8. Fold in broken nuts, and drop by a tablespoon onto a cookie sheet covered with waxed paper. Explain that each mound represents the rocky tomb where Jesus’ body was laid. Read Matthew 27:57-60.

9. Place the cookie sheet in the oven, close the door and turn the oven OFF.

10. Give each child a piece of tape and seal the oven door. Explain that Jesus’ tomb was sealed. Read Matthew 27:65-66.

11.Tell your children that it is time to go to bed (even though they may feel sad to wait until morning). Explain that Jesus’ followers were much more sad to leave Jesus in the tomb. Since his body was dead, they didn’t know when they would see him again. Read John 16:22.

12. On Easter Sunday, open the oven and give everyone a cookie. When they take a bite, they will see that the cookies are hollow. On the first Easter, Jesus’ followers were amazed to find the tomb open and empty. Read Matthew 28:1-9.
