Carnation Experiment for Easter
This is a great visual way to teach how Jesus took our sins on himself at the cross.
Supplies:
12 white carnations
Small Vase
1 t. of red food coloring
Instructions:
1. On Good Friday, place the white carnations in a vase of water.
2. Add a teaspoon of red food coloring to the water to symbolize our sin.
2. After an hour or so, a slight pink color will start to show on the carnations. By Saturday, the carnations should be pink with a red trim. Discuss that Jesus took our sins upon himself when he hung on the cross.
“He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed” (1 Peter 2:24).
3. On Easter Sunday, place fresh white lilies in the vase (see our Easter Lilies page for information on the symbolism of the lily). Explain that since Jesus paid the penalty for our sins, he has made us “white as snow”:
“Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool” (Isaiah 1:18).
