Irish Soda Bread

The below recipe is for a traditional Irish bread. Serve it on the side for an authentic St. Patrick’s Day meal. Though the addition of sugar is not authentic, it definitely helps to appeal to a sweet American tooth.

Irish Soda BreadIngredients:

4 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 3/4 cup (14 oz.) buttermilk
1/4 cup sugar (optional)
2 Tablespoons of butter

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees, and grease an 8″ or 9″ round cake pan.

2. Combine flour, baking soda, salt and sugar.

3. Add buttermilk to form a sticky dough.

4. Place on a floured surface and knead lightly.

5. Shape into a ball and place in greased cake pan. Flatten the dough and cut a cross shape in the top.

6. Cover the pan with another pan and bake for 30 minutes.

7. Remove the cover pan, and bake an additional 15 minutes. Remove from oven and spread butter over top.
