The Story of St. Nicholas, More Than Reindeer and a Red Suit:Cheryl Odden, Author and R.F. Palavicini, IllustratorThis book is published by Voice of the Martyrs. There are not a lot of copies in print, so it can sometimes cost a premium. However, the books in this series are gems. They tell the stories of famous men like St. Nicholas (who suffered for his faith) and then connect them to modern believers who are enduring persecution. A great teaching tool!

Jotham’s Journey, A Storybook for Advent:Arnold Ytreeide, AuthorJotham is a ten-year-old boy who is separated from his family. His search for them is full of adventures across the land of Israel. Ultimately, he meets up with them, as well as the newborn Savior in Bethlehem. This creative story is divided up into short chapters for each day of Advent and includes a daily discussion on Biblical themes. This book can help to start a wonderful tradition of storytelling for Advent.

Each story is illustrated by a different artist, which adds a unique variety to the book. It is a great addition to a Christmas library for children.

The Very First Christmas: Paul L. Maier, Author and Francisco Ordaz, IllustratorWhen a young boy asks his mom to tell him a “real” story instead of a fairy tale, she proceeds to narrate the story of the first Christmas according to the gospel of Luke. Interesting historical details are woven through the story as the young boy asks questions about the setting of the first century. The illustrations are fantastic.

The Story of the Other Wise Man: Henry van Dyke, AuthorThis moving story introduces a fictional Wise Man who fails to meet up with his companions, because he stops to help a man in need. As he journeys alone to find the King of the Jews, he is prevented time and again by pausing to assist others. As this “other” Wise Man is about to die after many years of searching, he hears the heavenly voice of Jesus confirming that through his service to others, he had served Christ. “His treasures were accepted” and he “had found the King.” Henry van Dyke carefully researched the historical setting and the details of travel in the first century to create this story.
